Frankly, American Idol is becoming one of our least favorite shows. Paula and Simon's antics are annoying and disrespectful. Paula has never said anything intelligent, and Simon's comments, which we used to find witty and insightful, are just getting old. Randy and Kara can't seem to find anything to say other than (a) you didn't make it your own, (b) you made it your own, or (c) you changed it too much. Ryan is an ineffective waste of a host. The studio audience is out of control. Everything seems to be carefully manipulated. We probably won't watch it next season. But, for completeness sake:
We usually prefer Kris while recognizing that Adam is objectively the better performer. Last night, we preferred Kris, and thought Kris gave the best performances. "Heartless" was excellent -- we liked his version better than Kayne West's. "Apologize" was close in quality to the original, and way better (by a factor of a bazillion) than One Republic's own performance of it live on last season's show. Adam's performances we thought were a bit of a mess, as well as predictable. He can scream. Great. As for Taylor Hicks Danny, we still don't like him. He can yell in a raspy voice. Good for him.
