Here is a pair of male Cassin's finches on our feeder. You can differentiate a Cassin's finch from a house finch by the color of its crown -- Cassin's finch has a bright red crown that contrasts with the red on the rest of its body; the house finch is more uniformly dull red. Cassin's finches are found mostly in the mountain west, but y'all on the east and west coasts have a similar finch, the purple finch, which also has red on its back. Interesting fact: Cassin's finches love salt.
