"Amaryllis" (actually Hippeastrum) is often given as a gift in the winter months. Most people enjoy the flowers and then throw the plant out. This is a shame, since these bulbs are extremely easy to take care of. In spring, summer, and fall, keep them outside where they will get morning sun but shade in the hottest part of the day. We put ours on the patio in a pot of annuals to add texture. In winter, sit them somewhere cool and forget about them. They are hardy to at least 25, so you can leave them outside if your climate permits. In spring, enjoy again. You may even get baby bulbs that you can divide off. Repotting every three years is sufficient. This one was a gift from our friend Edith two years ago.
