Backyard Birding

Here's a red-shafted flicker that was hanging out in our backyard today. Flickers are a member of the woodpecker family, but they prefer to eat on the ground rather than in trees. In the western U.S., flickers have red underwings, while in the eastern U.S. they have yellow underwings. We wish we could have held out for a better picture, but we see these only about once a month.
