Sunflower Math

We're not huge sunflower fans, but this one came up randomly by the pond and we decided to leave it. We're guessing it came from spillage from the bird feeder.

Fun math/nature fact:

Starting with the numbers 1 and 1, create a sequence where each number is the sum of the previous two numbers. This gives 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, and so on. This is called the Fibonacci sequence, and the numbers in the sequence are called Fibonacci numbers.

Now take a sunflower, and count the spirals in each direction. Click here to see how to count them. Your results will be two adjacent Fibonacci numbers. Our sunflower has 55 spirals in one direction and 89 in the other. Cool, right?
