About Town

Copperton, Utah, on the southwest edge of the Salt Lake Valley (click for a map).

While investigating the woods for horror-film-appropriate scenery, Konnor happened upon this deer, who didn't seem to mind the intrusion too much. Are you scared yet?

Copperton was established in 1926 by the Utah Copper Corporation to serve as a home for the workers at its copper mine. Actually, it was one of several mining towns, but the others have since been dismantled to make way for the ever-growing Bingham Canyon Mine pit. This is the largest open-pit copper mine and the largest man-made excavation in the world, currently measuring about 4,000 feet deep and 2.5 miles across. Some people say it's more impressive than the Grand Canyon. Maybe we'll venture out to the Visitor's Center this summer and take some pictures.

P.S. to locals: The Bingham Canyon Mine (or the Great Wall of China for that matter) is NOT visible from space, using any reasonable definition of the word "space." And it is certainly not visible from the moon. So stop it already.
