We hear quail all the time (you can't miss them -- they're the loudest thing on the block), and we see them frequently on the street and in people's front yards, but we hardly ever see them in our backyard. Here's a pair checking out the scenery this weekend. We have both California quail and Gambel's quail in the area, and they also hybridize, but these look like California quail. The Cornell University Lab of Ornithology (of course) has a great quail recording here.
