Why we like 24: When something potentially bad is about to happen (like someone getting shot), it's exciting because there's actually some chance of it happening. In most other shows, moments of conflict are boring because you know someone or something will swoop in to stop whatever it is or save whoever it is at the last moment.
[SPOILER ALERT -- Our favorite example of this aggravating deus ex machina: at the end of the Planet of the Apes remake, just when Marky Mark Wahlberg is about to be overcome by a wave of ape warriors, a chimp in a pod flies in from nowhere and everyone just stops fighting because the apes think he's their god. Ugh.]
