Want to go for a drive?

We were freaked out when they rebuilt I-15 and put in single-point urban interchanges, which are crazy six-way intersections that control the on-ramps and off-ramps in both freeway directions as well as the through traffic with one set of lights (see diagram to left). As Wikipedia puts it, "This can be unsafe particularly if drivers are unfamiliar with the interchange type." This is a nice way of saying "people don't know what lane to follow and drive into oncoming traffic."

Now, we're getting a super crazy "Continuous Flow Intersection," only the fourth in the country, on 35th South and Bangerter Highway. You can see "how it works" here. Looks more like a giant pile-up of randomly arranged cars to us. Can someone wrap their head around this configuration and explain it to us?
