Spring

Happy spring? There's actually some disagreement on when spring actually begins. Most people are used to marking the beginning of spring on March 21 (our calendar even says so), but astronomically speaking, the equinox occurs on March 20 in the United States. And, the equinox does not necessarily mark the day with exactly 12 hours of daylight; that is called the equilux, and happens to occur on March 17 in Salt Lake City, with sunrise at 7:37 am and sunset at 7:37 pm. In meteorology, spring is considered to be the entire months of March, April, and May. The Chinese use the equinoxes and solstices to mark the middle of the seasons rather than the beginnings. It does seem to make more sense for the coldest time of the year (early January) to fall in the middle of winter, not at the beginning of it. Likewise, the warmest part of the year (late July) should mark the middle of summer, not the beginning of it.

In any case, we'll continue to mark the beginning of spring as the day that our daffodils bloom. Here's a picture of one of our daffodil bunches in the front yard.
