Plant of the Week

Here's a laelia orchid from the greenhouse. It's one of the most prolific growers we have; doubling its flower spikes each year. This year it has eight spikes with about 30 flowers total. It's an especially pleasant sight in the middle of January, and it has a great fragrance as well.

I worked in a flower shop during my college years and it was there that I was told orchids actually had a smell. Until that time I didn't realize there was any scent. I was told they have to be fresh to have a scent. The ones bought for corsages are several days old and therefore, don't smell.
