Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War, by Nathaniel Philbrick, is a good history of Plymouth Colony for those of us whose entire knowledge of the subject comes from what we learned in grade school (you know, pilgrims with funny hats and the first Thankgiving).

P.S. Speaking of this time period in history, do yourself the favor of NOT seeing the movie The New World, which we had the misfortune of watching last night. It is a two-hour-plus bore-fest during which almost nothing happens. Really, the Wikipedia article on Pocahantas was both more interesting and more enlightening.
