This week we have an "amaryllis" flowering in a pot in our backyard. They are usually sold as indoor plants that bloom in the winter, but if you plant them outside the following spring, they will sometimes bloom again in the summer. The leaves you see in the picture do not belong to this plant; it is growing among other things. We've put "amaryllis" in quotes because the plant sold in the U.S. under this name is actually not an amaryllis at all, but rather a hippeastrum. Also blooming this week are the rudbeckia, commonly known as black-eyed Susans, in our front yard.
