Flag Burning

"Is this the most important thing the Senate could be doing at this time? I can tell you: You're darned right it is."

--Our very own Senator Orrin Hatch, debating a Constitutional amendment to ban flag burning. The measure passed the House of Representatives, but failed in the Senate by one vote. Here's how important it really is: "There have been four instances of flag burning or vandalism this year and 13 instances in 2005, according to the Citizens Flag Alliance, an association of veterans' groups that supported the amendment." Four?

Orrin goes on to proclaim that the Amendment "would have reasserted congressional authority and sent a message to the Supreme Court that 'your job is to interpret, not make, laws.'" You know, like that pesky law they made about free speech.
